LITTER BOXES

This article is based on personal experience. Cats seem to have an instinct to urinate and defecate in litter pans. I believe the reason for this is because if you will notice where outside kitties urinate, it is in the dirt or sand. How many cats do you see urinating on concrete?

If a kitten does not use the litter box, the first thing you should try to determine is: Does the kitty not like the litter? I had this occur in my personal cat and a simple switch of brands was my key to success.

The second possibility is the location of the litter box. It should be easily accessible and out of the way of traffic.

The third reason may be due to a dirty litter box. Litter boxes should be cleaned every 24 hours, (also due to toxoplasmosis as well as sanitary reasons).

Finally, if you have multiple cats, you may have to get multiple litter boxes due to cats not wanting to urinate (or stand) where another cat has voided.

A new cat in the household can also affect litter boxes. Sometimes a new addition may disrupt the structural hierarchy resulting in inappropriate elimination. This is important differentiate from other causes of increased urination.
