HOW TO GIVE YOUR PET MEDICINE
When it comes to giving your pet medicine, this can be difficult if not thought through. I constantly ask owners would they prefer to have a pill shoved down their throat or eat it in something? When it comes to giving your pet a pill, the easiest way to perform this is to place the medicine in a treat if they do not have a condition that prevents this. There are many treats on the market today that have holes cut in them to place a pill. This will often prevent the pet from knowing the pill is present, and the pet thinks it is a treat. The result is the pet will eat it happily. If you cannot find the treats, I often tell people to place the treat in cheese. If the pet routinely removes the pill from the treat or cheese, the pill can be placed in the back of the mouth. After the pill has been placed in the mouth, close the pet's mouth and blow in her/his nose. This will often cause the pet to swallow. When it comes to liquid medicine, place the pet’s head with the nose pointed up. Next place the dropper between the cheek teeth and the gums and give the medicine. Remember to give your pet a treat and love on your pet after medications are given because you want this to be a fun time. One more point I want to make on this subject is to give medications as directed. By stopping antibiotics early, resistance to the antibiotics can occur with them not working in the future. Also the underlying condition may be in remission, but not gone and the lack of continued treatment will result in reoccurrence of the condition with possible development of resistance against antibiotics. Also consult your veterinarian before giving any medicine to a pet that hasn’t been prescribed. For more information on other topics, see www.freeonlinevet.com. |
